The God Who Reigns

Thursday's Reflection
Psalm 103:19 — The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
David declares the universal scope of God's kingdom—no realm exists outside His authority, no power operates beyond His control. His throne in heaven establishes the government that rules all earthly governments, the authority behind all authorities, the power above all powers. This cosmic perspective dwarfs human pride and comforts human fear.
Throughout history, this truth has sustained believers when earthly powers demanded what belongs only to God. In the early centuries, Roman emperors declared themselves gods and commanded worship. Christians faced a terrible choice: burn incense to Caesar or face death. Yet they refused, because they served a higher King. Centuries later, when medieval popes claimed absolute authority over conscience, reformers stood firm, appealing to the King of kings whose Word alone could bind the soul.
This same conviction still empowers believers today. Consider Pastor Han, a quiet man who shepherded a small underground church in North Korea. In 2009, authorities arrested him for refusing to display the regime's portraits in his home—a simple act the government considered treason. During his interrogation, officers demanded he renounce his faith and acknowledge their leader as supreme. Pastor Han replied calmly, "I respect the authorities God has placed over me, but there is only one Supreme Ruler. His kingdom existed before yours began, and it will remain when yours becomes dust." Those words cost him fifteen years in a labor camp. Yet even there, he quietly shared his faith, because he knew that prison walls couldn't limit the reach of heaven's throne. His daughter later said, "Father never spoke with hatred of his captors. He simply could not give them what belonged to God alone."
This eternal perspective helps us live wisely in any nation. We respect earthly authority and fulfill our civic duties faithfully. But we remember that we are citizens of a better country, whose builder and maker is God. When human governments align with heaven's values, we gladly cooperate. When they demand what belongs to God alone, we respectfully decline—knowing that the King of kings will sustain us, whatever the cost.
Prayer: King of heaven, remind us that Your throne stands above all thrones. Give us courage to remain loyal to You when earthly powers demand compromise. May Your kingdom rule in our hearts until it fills the earth. Amen.
