The God Who Reigns

Tuesday's Reflection

Isaiah 46:10 — Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.
God’s sovereignty stretches beyond the limits of time and power. He sees the end from the beginning, directing the flow of history according to His eternal purpose. Empires rise and fall at His command; kings make their plans, yet it is God’s counsel that stands. From the prophecy of Babylon’s fall to the foretelling of Christ’s birth, Scripture records a God whose purposes cannot be altered by human ambition or failure. The same truth still governs our world today—history is not drifting toward chaos but moving under the steady hand of the Almighty.
Few lives illustrate this more clearly than that of Napoleon Bonaparte. Once the most powerful man in Europe, he boasted that his empire would dominate the world and that even God could not stop him. Yet within a few short years, his armies were defeated, his kingdom shattered, and he was exiled to the lonely island of Saint Helena. There, reflecting on his downfall, Napoleon reportedly said, “I know men, and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires; but on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love, and at this hour millions of men would die for Him.” The conqueror who once sought to rule the world confessed the enduring reign of Christ—the King whose counsel alone stands forever.
Such stories remind us that God’s purposes never fail. Nations may rage, leaders may boast, economies may crumble, but His plan moves forward unhindered. What seems uncertain to us is already settled in His design. Therefore, we rest in His sovereignty, trusting that even the events that puzzle us today are chapters in a story He has already completed from the beginning.
Prayer: Eternal God, You see the end from the beginning, and nothing escapes Your control. Help us to trust Your purposes when the world seems unstable and our plans fall apart. Let Your counsel stand firm in our hearts, and may Your will be done in our lives. Amen.
