The God Who Saves

Friday's Reflection
Romans 10:9 — That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Paul unites belief and confession as two sides of saving faith—the inward trust of the heart and the outward declaration of the lips. Faith must not remain silent or hidden; it finds completion when expressed. To confess Jesus as Lord is to acknowledge His rightful rule over our lives and to identify ourselves publicly with His death and resurrection. When we speak our faith, we strengthen it, and God’s Spirit uses that confession to deepen our conviction and witness.
Nowhere is this truth more vividly seen than in the story of the thief crucified beside Jesus. At first, both criminals mocked Him, but as the hours passed, one heart softened. Seeing Christ’s innocence, hearing His prayer—“Father, forgive them”—the thief’s belief was born. Turning to Jesus, he confessed openly before all: “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.” In that desperate moment, he fulfilled Romans 10:9—he believed in his heart and confessed with his mouth. Jesus’ answer came instantly: “Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” The dying thief could do no good works, make no restitution, and attend no rituals; yet his faith and confession secured eternal life. That brief exchange on the cross remains one of the purest demonstrations of salvation by grace through faith expressed in confession.
Every believer is called to the same courage—to confess Christ not only with words but with a life that reflects His resurrection power. Whether in baptism, daily conversation, or steadfast witness under trial, our confession gives glory to the One who saves. Faith kept silent fades; faith declared grows stronger and draws others to hope in the same Savior who welcomed a repentant thief into paradise.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, give us courage to confess Your name boldly and joyfully. Let our words and actions together proclaim the power of Your resurrection and draw others to the salvation You freely offer. Amen.
