Tuesday's Reflection

James 5:14–15 — Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
James establishes a beautiful connection between the community of faith and the ministry of healing. Prayer for the sick is not a private matter but a congregational responsibility. The elders represent the entire church family as they anoint and pray, symbolizing that healing flows from God through the love and faith of His people. The oil represents the Holy Spirit’s work, while the laying on of hands expresses the human touch that God often uses to channel His healing power.
The promise includes both physical healing and spiritual restoration—“if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” This reveals that God sees the whole person, addressing both body and soul in His healing ministry. A remarkable example occurred in 1952, when H.M.S. Richards Jr., then a young evangelist, suffered from a severe illness that left him bedridden and unable to preach. Doctors warned that his voice might never return. The elders of his church gathered to anoint and pray for him, committing his life fully to God’s will. Within days, his strength returned, and his voice—once nearly gone—was fully restored. He went on to preach for decades, continuing the gospel broadcast founded by his father, the Voice of Prophecy. His recovery became a living testimony that God still honors the prayer of faith, using both medical care and divine intervention to raise up His servants for His glory.
When believers pray together with humility and trust, heaven responds. Sometimes healing comes instantly; other times it unfolds through quiet perseverance. Yet always, the deeper miracle is the unity and faith that prayer creates within God’s people. As James reminds us, confession and prayer go hand in hand—spiritual and physical healing flow together when the church becomes a family of intercession and grace.
Prayer: Father, teach us to pray for one another with faith and love. Let Your Spirit bring healing to our bodies and forgiveness to our souls. Unite us as a church that bears one another’s burdens and rejoices in Your restoring power. Amen.
