Saturday's Reflection

Isaiah 60:1 — Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
Isaiah's prophetic call comes to a people emerging from darkness and despair. The command "arise, shine" is not a suggestion but an urgent imperative. The reason for this urgency is clear: "thy light is come"—the divine illumination has already arrived. The glory of the Lord has "risen upon thee" like the sun breaking over the horizon. The people's responsibility is not to create light but to reflect the light that has come to them.
This passage speaks powerfully to the church's calling in every generation. We do not shine by our own moral effort or religious achievement, but because the glory of God has risen upon us through Christ. A small congregation in a declining industrial town discovered this truth during a community crisis. When the main factory closed, leaving hundreds unemployed and many families facing foreclosure, despair settled over the community like a dark cloud. Instead of retreating into self-pity, the church chose to "arise and shine." They opened their doors as a job-search center, provided meals for struggling families, and offered hope through practical love and consistent prayer. Their building became known as the place where light still shone in the darkness. As word spread, volunteers came from other communities to help, media attention brought additional resources, and new businesses began to consider the town as a location. The church learned that when God's people choose to shine in dark times—not hiding their light under the bushel of discouragement—they become magnets for God's blessing and agents of His restoration in broken places.
