Justice and Mercy

Saturday's Reflection

James 2:13 — For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
James reveals both the danger of unmerciful hearts and the triumph of merciful ones. Those who consistently show no mercy to others will find no mercy when they stand before God's judgment. This is not arbitrary divine revenge but the natural consequence of hardened hearts—people who refuse to give mercy have also rejected the mercy offered to them through Christ. Conversely, mercy "rejoiceth against judgment"—meaning that merciful people have reason to face judgment with confidence, not because they are perfect, but because they have received and reflected God's mercy.
Two brothers had been estranged for fifteen years over a bitter business dispute. Each had legitimate grievances, and both had been hurt deeply. The older brother nursed his anger, repeatedly telling anyone who would listen about his sibling's betrayal. The younger brother chose a different path—he began praying for his brother, sending Christmas cards despite receiving no response, and speaking well of him when others brought up the conflict. After their father's funeral, they were forced to interact again. The older brother's bitterness had poisoned his relationships and filled his heart with darkness. The younger brother's mercy had freed him from the prison of resentment and filled his life with peace. In that moment of encounter, mercy triumphed over judgment. The older brother wept as he recognized how his unforgiving spirit had damaged his own soul. The merciful brother's example became the bridge that restored their relationship and demonstrated the liberating power of forgiveness.
