Wednesday's Reflection

Isaiah 58:10 — And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light shine in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day.
God's promise through Isaiah reveals the surprising connection between generosity and personal blessing. When we "draw out our soul" to the hungry—when we give not just our surplus but our very selves to those in need—God responds with abundance that goes far beyond material return. The light that shines "in obscurity" represents clarity in confusion, hope in despair, guidance in uncertainty. Our darkness becomes "as the noon day"—meaning the problems that once seemed overwhelming become manageable under God's blessing.
A farmer in Nebraska discovered this principle during the dust bowl years when his own crops were failing. Despite his family's need, he regularly shared what little harvest he had with neighbors who had lost everything. His wife worried they would starve, but the farmer trusted God's promises about generosity. That autumn, while other farms in the region produced almost nothing, his fields yielded an unexpected harvest—not enough to make him wealthy, but sufficient to carry his family and several others through the winter. Years later, he would testify that his most abundant harvests came not during the good years when giving was easy, but during the lean years when giving required faith. God had honored the principle of Isaiah 58:10, turning the darkness of economic hardship into the noonday brightness of His provision.
