Wednesday's Reflection
Matthew 23:23 — Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Jesus' confrontation with the Pharisees exposes a tendency that persists in religious circles today—majoring in minor details while neglecting major principles. These religious leaders meticulously tithed their garden herbs, counting out every tenth leaf of mint and cummin, yet ignored the "weightier matters" of justice, mercy, and faith. Christ does not dismiss their attention to detail ("these ought ye to have done"), but He condemns their misplaced priorities that strained out gnats while swallowing camels.
This warning challenges every believer to examine their spiritual priorities. It's possible to be punctual at church while being dishonest at work. We can memorize Scripture while gossiping about fellow believers. We might give generously to missions while treating our families harshly. We could defend doctrinal purity while lacking compassion for struggling souls. Christ calls us to comprehensive righteousness that attends to both the details and the main issues, but always with proper emphasis on what matters most to God. A businessman once realized he was tithing meticulously while paying his employees less than living wages. His conscience, awakened by this passage, led him to restructure his company's pay scale—a costly decision that ultimately brought greater blessing than all his previous religious activities combined.
