Justice and Mercy

Tuesday's Reflection

Zechariah 7:9 — Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother.
Zechariah's message reveals that justice and mercy are not competing values but complementary expressions of God's character. True judgment means making decisions based on truth rather than prejudice, facts rather than favoritism, principle rather than personal advantage. But this justice must be tempered with mercy—the compassionate recognition that we all fail, all need forgiveness, all deserve better than our worst moments define us.
William Wilberforce embodied this balance during his decades-long fight against slavery in the British Empire. His commitment to justice demanded the complete abolition of this evil system, regardless of economic or political cost. Yet his approach was consistently marked by mercy—he sought to convince rather than condemn his opponents, to educate rather than embarrass those who disagreed with him. Even toward slave owners, he demonstrated the grace that had transformed his own life. When the Slavery Abolition Act finally passed in 1833, Wilberforce had spent forty-six years pursuing justice through merciful means. His victory came not through harsh condemnation but through patient love that gradually opened hearts and minds to truth. This is the model for all Christian social action—unwavering commitment to what is right, expressed through methods that reflect Christ's character.
