Compassion for the Poor and Needy

Thursday's Reflection

Luke 14:13 — But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
Jesus revolutionized the concept of hospitality with these words. In His culture, meals were social investments—you invited people who could return the favor, advance your status, or provide useful connections. Christ calls His followers to a different standard: invite those who cannot repay, who bring no social advantage, who might make other guests uncomfortable. This is hospitality as worship, generosity that reflects God's character rather than human calculation.
A wealthy businessman in Chicago began practicing this principle by hosting monthly dinners at his church, specifically for homeless families and elderly residents of nearby nursing homes. What started as duty gradually became joy as he discovered the rich conversations, authentic gratitude, and genuine friendships that developed around those tables. The businessman realized he had been the primary beneficiary—these guests had given him perspective on life's true values, taught him about contentment and resilience, and shown him Christ's presence among "the least of these." His business associates noticed the change in him and began asking questions about the source of his newfound peace and purpose. The radical hospitality that began as obedience to Christ's words became a powerful witness to His transforming grace.
