Saturday's Reflection
2 Corinthians 9:7 — Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
Paul reveals that God is more interested in the heart behind our giving than the amount we give. The word "cheerful" comes from the Greek "hilaros," from which we get our word "hilarious." God delights in givers who find joy, even laughter, in their generosity. This is not the grim duty of religious obligation but the bubbling overflow of hearts touched by divine grace. When we truly understand how lavishly God has given to us—His Son, His Spirit, His promises, His eternal love—our response cannot help but be generous.
In a small village in Kenya, an elderly widow named Grace became famous for her joyful giving. Though she lived in a one-room hut and survived on less than a dollar a day, she regularly brought vegetables from her tiny garden to share with families in even greater need. Visitors to her church were amazed to see her dancing with delight each time the offering basket was passed, carefully placing her worn coins with a smile that lit up the sanctuary. When asked about her secret, Grace would say, "God has given me everything—life, breath, salvation, hope. How can I not be happy to give back?" Her hilarious generosity became a sermon that preached itself, drawing others into the joy of sacrificial giving. She had discovered what Paul knew: cheerful giving is both a reflection of God's character and a pathway to experiencing His joy in our own hearts.
