Compassion for the Poor and Needy

Friday's Reflection
Deuteronomy 15:11 — For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.
God's realism about persistent poverty might discourage us if we misunderstood His purpose. He is not declaring defeat in the battle against human need, but establishing a permanent call to generosity. As long as sin affects this world, there will be inequality, suffering, and want. This reality does not excuse our indifference but increases our responsibility. Each generation of believers must "open wide" their hands to meet the needs of their time, knowing that this calling will continue until Christ returns to establish perfect justice.
The early church in Jerusalem demonstrated this principle beautifully. Acts 2:46-47 tells us they met daily, sharing meals and possessions "with gladness and singleness of heart." This was not occasional charity but a lifestyle of mutual care that eliminated destitution among believers. Their commitment to economic sharing was so radical that Luke could write, "Neither was there any among them that lacked" (Acts 4:34). This community became a magnet for seekers and a powerful witness to the transforming power of the gospel. When the watching world sees Christians taking responsibility for each other's welfare—opening their hands wide to meet genuine needs—they witness a preview of God's kingdom where love triumphs over selfishness.
