Compassion for the Poor and Needy

Monday's Reflection

Matthew 25:40 — And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Christ's words reveal a stunning truth that transforms how we see every act of mercy: when we serve the poor, the hungry, the forgotten, we are actually serving Jesus Himself. This is not metaphor or spiritual symbolism—it is reality in the economy of heaven. The homeless man we pass on the street corner carries within him the image of God. The elderly woman struggling with her groceries bears the likeness of our Savior. The refugee family seeking shelter represents Christ in disguise, testing our hearts and revealing our true character.
Mother Teresa built her entire ministry on this profound understanding. Walking through the slums of Calcutta, she would whisper to herself, "Jesus in distressing disguise." When she lifted a dying man from the gutter, she saw Jesus. When she held a abandoned baby, she cradled Jesus. When she dressed infected wounds, she ministered to Jesus. This vision enabled her to serve with joy in places where others saw only despair, to find beauty in situations others deemed hopeless. Her secret was not extraordinary compassion but clear spiritual vision—she recognized Christ in "the least of these." When we begin to see with these eyes, every act of service becomes worship, every sacrifice becomes communion with our Lord.
