Justice and Mercy

Monday's Reflection

Proverbs 21:3 — To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Solomon's proverb strikes at the heart of religious formalism that substitutes ritual for righteousness. God is not impressed by elaborate ceremonies, expensive offerings, or lengthy prayers when the worshipper's life contradicts their worship. The Lord who established Israel's sacrificial system declares that justice in daily relationships pleases Him more than perfection in temple rituals. This principle echoes throughout Scripture: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice" (Hosea 6:6), and "What does the Lord require of you but to do justly" (Micah 6:8).
The prophet Amos thundered this same message to Israel when their worship services were magnificent but their social practices were corrupt. They offered their best lambs on the altar while oppressing the poor in the marketplace. They sang hymns on the Sabbath while cheating workers of fair wages throughout the week. God's response was devastating: "I hate, I despise your feast days... Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them" (Amos 5:21-22). Instead, He called for justice to "roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream." The modern church must hear this same call—that authentic worship expresses itself through just treatment of others, fair business practices, honest relationships, and concern for those who have no voice to defend themselves.
