Wednesday's Reflection
Acts 1:8 — But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Before Pentecost, the disciples were timid men hiding behind locked doors, paralyzed by fear and uncertainty. After the Spirit came, these same men stood boldly before crowds, rulers, and persecutors, turning the world upside down with their testimony. The difference was not in their education, eloquence, or natural courage—the difference was divine empowerment. This same Holy Spirit dwells within every believer today, not as a distant memory of apostolic times, but as a present reality available to ordinary people living ordinary lives.
The power Christ promises is not always manifested in dramatic healings or miraculous signs, though God certainly works in such ways. More often, it appears in supernatural love for difficult people, in wisdom to know what to say in impossible situations, in courage to stand for truth when it costs us dearly, in peace that passes understanding during life's storms. A hospital chaplain once told of praying with a dying man who had lived far from God. As she spoke of Christ's love, something shifted in the room—a presence that had nothing to do with her words or training, yet everything to do with the Spirit's gentle drawing. The man wept, confessed his need, and passed into eternity with hope rather than fear. This is the power of Acts 1:8—not human persuasion, but divine transformation working through surrendered vessels.
