Living by Faith

Tuesday's Reflection

2 Corinthians 5:7 — For we walk by faith, not by sight.
During a dark period in Israel’s history, the nation lived in constant fear. The Midianites repeatedly invaded the land, destroying crops and livestock. Israel was economically ruined and emotionally broken. Many hid in caves and strongholds, wondering whether God was still with them. It was in this atmosphere of fear and defeat that God called Gideon.
Gideon was not found on a battlefield but hiding, threshing wheat in a winepress to avoid detection. When the angel of the Lord addressed him as “mighty warrior,” the title seemed ironic. Gideon felt neither mighty nor courageous. He questioned God’s presence, pointing to Israel’s suffering and his own insignificance. Yet God did not see Gideon as he saw himself. God saw what faith, when exercised, could become.
God called Gideon to deliver Israel, and Gideon responded honestly—with doubt and hesitation. He asked for signs, not out of rebellion but out of weakness. God, in patience and mercy, reassured him repeatedly. Through each sign, Gideon’s faith grew—not suddenly, but progressively. Faith, after all, often develops through struggle rather than certainty.
When Gideon finally gathered an army, thirty-two thousand men answered the call. From a human perspective, the numbers still seemed insufficient against the Midianites’ massive force. Yet God declared the army too large. One reduction followed another until only three hundred men remained. God made it unmistakably clear that victory would not come through military strength but through dependence on Him.
Armed only with trumpets, jars, and torches, Gideon’s small force obeyed God’s unconventional strategy. The result was a decisive victory—not because Israel was strong, but because God was faithful. Gideon learned that faith does not eliminate fear; it chooses obedience despite fear. He moved forward trusting God’s word rather than visible odds.
Gideon’s story reminds us that living by faith means trusting God’s perspective over our own. We often focus on our limitations, resources, or probabilities, while God focuses on His power and purpose. Faith is not confidence in ourselves but confidence in God. Like Gideon, we may begin unsure and hesitant, but as we respond in obedience, faith grows. Walking by faith means moving forward even when the outcome is unclear, believing that God is able to accomplish His will through those who trust Him.
Prayer: Lord, teach us to walk by faith and not by sight. Help us trust You when our strength feels small and the challenge feels overwhelming. Grow our faith as we obey You step by step, relying on Your power rather than our understanding. Amen.
