The Word of God

Tuesday's Reflection
Matthew 4:4 — But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Jesus teaches that life is more than physical sustenance; the soul must be fed with the Word of God. Just as our bodies weaken without food, our spirits wither without Scripture. We can survive weeks without food, but we cannot spiritually survive without God's Word. It nourishes faith, strengthens hope, and sustains us through trials that would otherwise crush us. Reading the Bible daily is not a religious duty but a necessity for spiritual survival.
When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, the Savior did not rely on His divine power or debate theology—He responded with Scripture. Three times He answered, "It is written," and three times the enemy retreated. This reveals the true power of God's Word: it is our sword in spiritual warfare, our defense against deception, and our source of strength when we are weak. If Jesus Himself needed Scripture to overcome temptation, how much more do we?
The prophet Jeremiah understood this when he wrote, "Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart" (Jeremiah 15:16). He did not merely read Scripture—he devoured it, absorbed it, made it part of his very being. When God's Word fills our hearts, it becomes the source of joy even in sorrow, strength even in weakness, and hope even in despair. We do not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach us to hunger for Your Word more than for daily bread. Feed our souls with Scripture until it becomes our strength, our joy, and our life. Help us to hide Your Word in our hearts so we may not sin against You. Amen.
