Living by Faith

Monday's Reflection

Hebrews 11:1 — Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Faith is not wishful thinking or blind optimism; it is confidence in God's promises even before they are fulfilled. The word "substance" means foundation or assurance—faith gives solid reality to our hopes. The word "evidence" means proof or conviction—faith convinces us of spiritual realities we cannot see with physical eyes. This definition revolutionizes how we approach the Christian life. We do not wait to see before we believe; we believe, and then we see God work. Faith bridges the gap between the visible and the invisible, the temporal and the eternal, the present struggle and the promised victory.
Hebrews 11 reminds us that faith has always been the foundation of God's people. Noah built an ark when there was no rain, trusting God's warning about a flood no one had ever seen. Abraham left his home without knowing his destination, believing God would lead him to a promised land. Moses chose to suffer with God's people rather than enjoy the pleasures of Egypt, looking ahead to an eternal reward. Sarah received strength to conceive a child in her old age because she believed God's promise. Each of these heroes acted on faith before they saw results, and their obedience demonstrated that faith is more than mental agreement—it is trust that transforms how we live.
Faith gives substance to hope and opens our eyes to eternal realities unseen by the natural eye. When we walk by faith, we live in light of heaven's perspective rather than earth's limitations. We make decisions based on God's Word rather than present circumstances. We invest in eternity rather than storing up treasures on earth. Faith anchors our souls when storms rage and gives us courage to obey when the cost is high. This is the faith that pleases God and the faith by which the just shall live.
Prayer: Lord, increase our faith. Help us to trust Your promises even when we cannot see fulfillment. Give us the faith of Noah, Abraham, and Moses—faith that acts on Your Word and perseveres to the end. Amen.
