Living by Faith

Wednesday's Reflection

Romans 1:17 — For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
This verse sparked the Reformation and has inspired countless believers throughout church history. Faith is not only for salvation but for daily living. The phrase "from faith to faith" suggests continuous, growing faith—we begin the Christian life by faith, we continue by faith, and we will finish by faith. Every choice, every trial, and every victory flows from trusting God moment by moment. Faith is not a one-time decision or a single dramatic event; it is a lifestyle of daily dependence on God. The just—those made righteous through Christ—shall live by faith, not by feelings, circumstances, or human wisdom.
In 1952, Chinese church leader Watchman Nee was arrested by Communist authorities and charged with false crimes. He was sentenced to fifteen years of hard labor and "re-education," working eight hours in a factory, enduring eight hours of communist indoctrination, and allowed only eight hours for rest. The authorities offered him freedom multiple times if he would lead believers into the government-controlled Three-Self Church and renounce his independent faith. Nee refused every offer. For twenty years he endured prison, never wavering in his confession of Christ. His Bible was confiscated, yet he sang hymns daily and wrote whenever possible. When he fell gravely ill in his final days, still no mercy was shown. He died in prison on May 30, 1972, at age sixty-nine. Before his death, he wrote a final testimony on a scrap of paper and placed it under his pillow. When his niece collected his belongings, she found it: "Christ is the Son of God who died for the redemption of sinners and resurrected after three days. This is the greatest truth in the universe. I die because of my belief in Christ. Watchman Nee." For twenty years of imprisonment, torture, and pressure, he lived by faith and died by faith. The just shall live by faith—even unto death.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, give us the faith of Watchman Nee—unwavering, courageous, and faithful unto death. Help us to live by faith every day, trusting You completely regardless of circumstances or consequences. Strengthen us to stand firm in trials. Amen.
