Monday's Reflection
Romans 5:8 — But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
God's love is not conditional upon our performance or worthiness. He does not wait for us to clean ourselves up before offering His affection. Instead, He demonstrates love at its most radical—while we were still sinners, hostile to Him and walking in rebellion, Christ died for us. This is love that acts first, that pursues when we are running away, that extends mercy when we deserve judgment. The cross stands as the ultimate proof that God's love is not based on what we bring to the relationship but on who He is by nature.
Human love typically responds to goodness, beauty, or value in the beloved. We love those who love us back, who treat us well, who add something positive to our lives. But divine love operates on entirely different principles. God loved us when we had nothing to offer Him, when our hearts were turned away from Him, when our lives were stained with sin. He did not wait for repentance before extending grace; rather, His grace produces repentance. The sacrifice of Christ on Calvary occurred not because we deserved it, but precisely because we did not. This is the scandal and the glory of the gospel—unmerited, unconditional, unstoppable love.
As we prepare to enter a new year, this truth anchors our hope. Our standing with God does not depend on keeping New Year's resolutions or achieving spiritual goals. It rests entirely on what Christ has already done. Whether the coming year brings triumph or failure in our personal struggles, God's love remains constant. He loved us at our worst, and nothing we do in the future can make Him love us more or less. This liberating truth frees us to pursue holiness not to earn His favor, but to respond to the favor already freely given. We change not to be loved, but because we are loved.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for loving us when we were unlovable, for dying for us while we were still sinners. As we face the new year, remind us that Your love does not depend on our performance. Help us to live from Your acceptance, not for Your acceptance, and to extend the same unconditional love to others. Amen.
