Tuesday's Reflection
Matthew 1:24 — Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife.
While Mary's role in the Christmas story receives most attention, Joseph's quiet obedience and courage proved equally essential. When he discovered Mary's pregnancy, he had every legal and social right to divorce her publicly, exposing her to shame and possible death. Instead, he chose mercy, planning a quiet separation. Then God intervened through a dream, calling Joseph to an even more difficult path: marry Mary, adopt her child as his own, endure the gossip and judgment that would follow. Scripture tells us simply, "Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him." No recorded complaint, no hesitation, no demand for further explanation—just obedience. His strength, courage, and faithfulness provided the human shelter within which the incarnation could unfold safely.
Joseph's quiet faithfulness reflects the character God honors throughout Scripture. When Abraham was called to leave his homeland, he "went out, not knowing whither he went" (Hebrews 11:8). When Moses stood before the burning bush and God called him to confront Pharaoh, he obeyed despite his fears and inadequacies. When the disciples heard Jesus say "Follow me," they left their nets and followed. Faith is not always dramatic or visible to others—sometimes it looks like Joseph waking from sleep and simply doing what God commanded, regardless of personal cost. His protection of Mary and Jesus, his provision for them as a carpenter, his willingness to be a father to the Son of God—all these quiet acts of obedience made possible the most important childhood in history. Joseph teaches us that faithful obedience doesn't require spotlights or recognition; it requires only hearing God's voice and acting on it, trusting that what God commands, He also empowers.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, give us Joseph's courage to obey even when obedience is costly. Teach us that quiet faithfulness matters greatly in Your kingdom. Help us to do what You command simply because You have commanded it. Amen.
