The Promise of a Savior

Friday's Reflection

Isaiah 9:6 — For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah's prophecy painted a portrait of the coming Messiah that defied human expectations. This promised child would not be merely a good teacher or a powerful king—He would be "Mighty God" and "Everlasting Father," titles belonging to deity alone. The government would rest on His shoulders, meaning His kingdom would never end. Each name reveals a different facet of who He would be: Wonderful in His works, Counselor in His wisdom, Prince of Peace in His reign. Israel waited centuries for this promise, clinging to these words through exile, oppression, and silence.
The power of a promise lies not just in its fulfillment but in how it sustains us during the waiting. During World War II, Gladys Aylward, a British missionary in China, was forced to flee with one hundred orphaned children as Japanese forces advanced. They walked for weeks over mountains, facing starvation and danger at every turn. When the children grew frightened and asked if they would survive, Gladys would gather them and recite Isaiah's promises: "The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary" (Isaiah 40:28). Those ancient words became fresh strength for each day's journey. All one hundred children reached safety. Gladys later said, "God's promises were written centuries before I needed them, but they were there waiting—perfect, powerful, and exactly on time." The same promises that sustained Israel through exile sustained a missionary and her children through war, proving that God's Word transcends time and circumstance.
Prayer: Mighty God, thank You for the promises that sustained Your people through centuries of waiting. Teach us to trust Your Word when the path ahead seems uncertain, knowing that Your promises never fail. Amen.
