The Promise of a Savior

Thursday's Reflection
Hosea 11:1 — When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
Hosea spoke these words during one of Israel's darkest periods. The nation had abandoned God, chasing after idols and trusting in foreign alliances instead of their Deliverer. Yet even as Hosea pronounced judgment, God's heart broke with longing for His wayward people. Through the prophet's own painful marriage to an unfaithful wife, God illustrated His undying love for Israel. "Out of Egypt have I called my son" reminded the people of their beginning—how God had loved them when they were helpless slaves, delivered them with mighty power, and called them to be His treasured possession. This was not just history but a promise: the God who called them out of Egypt once would call them back again, just as a father never stops loving his child no matter how far they wander.
Centuries later, this prophecy found deeper fulfillment when Joseph fled to Egypt with Mary and the infant Jesus, escaping Herod's massacre. But the pattern continues even today. In 1975, when communist forces took over Vietnam, thousands of Christians fled by boat, many drowning at sea. Pastor Hien Pham was among those who survived the perilous journey, spending months in a refugee camp in Malaysia before finally reaching safety. Years later he testified, "In that camp, we had lost everything—our homes, our churches, our country. But we remembered that our God is the God who calls His people out of Egypt. He brought Israel through the Red Sea; He brought His Son safely out of Egypt; and He brought us through the South China Sea. The same promise that sustained ancient Israel became our hope." The God who delivers has not changed—He still calls His children out of bondage and leads them to safety.
Prayer: Lord God, You are the Deliverer who called Israel from Egypt and who still rescues Your people today. When we face exile, loss, or danger, remind us that You see, You care, and You will bring us through. Amen.
