Monday's Reflection
Luke 1:38 — And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.
The Christmas story begins not with angels' songs or shepherds' worship, but with a young woman's "yes" to God. When Gabriel appeared to Mary with this staggering announcement, she could have refused. She could have argued about her unworthiness, her youth, the social consequences, the impossibility of virgin birth. Instead, after asking one honest question, she responded with simple surrender: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." Mary's willingness to trust God despite enormous personal cost shaped all of human history. Her "yes" opened the door for the incarnation, making room in the world for the Savior.
Mary's obedience echoes throughout Scripture and history as a pattern of faithful surrender. In the fourth century, a young woman named Macrina the Younger faced a similar choice. Born into a wealthy Christian family in Cappadocia, she was betrothed to marry a promising young man. But when he died before the wedding, her family expected her to marry someone else of equal status. Instead, Macrina felt called to dedicate her life entirely to God. She refused all suitors, turned her family estate into a monastery, and devoted herself to prayer, study, and caring for the poor. Her brothers, Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa, later credited her influence with shaping their own ministries that would impact the entire church. When Gregory asked her why she chose this difficult path, she replied simply, "Christ called, and I said yes. What else could I do?" Like Mary, Macrina discovered that saying yes to God—even when it costs us earthly comfort—opens doors to purposes far greater than we can imagine.
Prayer: Lord, give us Mary's heart of surrender. When You call us to obedience that seems costly or impossible, help us to say yes, trusting that Your purposes are always good and Your grace is always sufficient. Amen.
