The Gift of Grace

Wednesday's Reflection
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 — But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
God's economy works differently than the world's. In human thinking, the more you give away, the less you have. But in the kingdom of God, generosity creates abundance. When we receive freely, we are meant to give freely—not to repay the giver, but to pass the blessing forward. Gifts are not meant to stop with us; they are meant to flow through us like water through a channel, refreshing everyone they touch. This is the lesson of multiplication: what we hold tightly shrivels, but what we release generously multiplies beyond measure.
In February 2011, Rick Ruzzamenti, a 44-year-old electrician from California, heard a remarkable story at his yoga studio. A desk clerk told him she had donated her kidney to an ailing friend she randomly met at Target. Ruzzamenti had never even donated blood, but the story captivated him. Two days later, he called Riverside Community Hospital and offered to donate one of his kidneys to a complete stranger. Hospital staff were skeptical at first—altruistic kidney donors were rare and often underwent intensive psychological screening. But Ruzzamenti was sincere: "I had an extra kidney, and someone needed one. It just made sense." His single act of generosity sparked what became known as Chain 124—the longest kidney donation chain in history at that time. Over four months, 17 hospitals across 11 states coordinated 60 surgeries, linking 30 willing donors with 30 desperately ill recipients. Children donated for parents, siblings for siblings, and strangers for strangers they would never meet. The chain ended with Donald Terry, a 47-year-old man dying on dialysis, who received the final kidney and wept with gratitude. One man's gift multiplied into 30 lives saved—a vivid picture of how God's generosity works when we give freely.
Prayer: Generous Father, break our fear of scarcity and teach us the joy of open hands. Help us to trust that when we give freely, You will provide abundantly. Make us channels of Your blessing to others. Amen.
