Sharing the Gospel

Monday's Reflection

Mark 16:15 — And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
William Carey was a shoemaker in England with a skin condition that kept him indoors, mending shoes and teaching himself languages from borrowed books. He had no wealth, no platform, and no obvious qualifications for greatness. But he became convinced that "Go ye into all the world" was a command still binding on ordinary believers — not just on the apostles who first heard it. His own slogan captured it: "Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God."
In 1793 he sailed for India and never once returned home. He spent forty-one years there as a translator, teacher, and pastor, helping put the Bible into six languages and opening over a hundred schools. The work was hard and the losses were heavy — he buried a wife and children on foreign soil and saw years pass with little visible fruit.
Yet Carey wanted none of the credit. As he lay dying in 1834, he called a fellow missionary to his bedside and whispered, "When I am gone, say nothing about Dr. Carey. Speak about Dr. Carey's Savior." His tombstone carries no list of achievements — only a line from a hymn: "A wretched, poor, and helpless worm, on Thy kind arms I fall." The gospel he carried across the world had first humbled the man carrying it.
Prayer: Lord, help us see our ordinary lives as the place where Your mission begins. Like Carey, may we attempt great things for You and give You all the glory. Amen.
