Tuesday's Reflection
John 1:41 — He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
Andrew is one of the quieter figures among the twelve disciples. He never preached a famous sermon recorded in Scripture, never wrote a book of the Bible, and is mostly remembered as "Simon Peter's brother." But every time Andrew appears in the Gospels, he is doing the same thing — bringing someone to Jesus. The very first thing he does after meeting Jesus is to go find his brother Simon and bring him along. And that brother, of course, became Peter, the great leader of the early church. The most famous of the apostles was reached by his less famous brother quietly tapping him on the shoulder.
This is Andrew's pattern throughout. Later, when a crowd of thousands needs feeding, it is Andrew who brings the boy with five loaves and two fish to Jesus. When some Greeks want to see Jesus, it is Andrew who brings them. He is the patron saint of personal, one-at-a-time witness — the man who never gathered a crowd but kept bringing individuals to the One who could meet them. He did not have a grand strategy. He simply could not keep the good news to himself, so he shared it with the people right in front of him, starting with his own family.
There is enormous encouragement in Andrew for the ordinary believer. You do not have to be a gifted speaker or a trained evangelist to do what Andrew did. You only have to know where to point people. Andrew's method was as simple as "come and see" — he had found Jesus, and he brought the people he loved to meet Him too. Most of the people who come to faith do so not through a famous preacher but through an Andrew — a friend, a relative, a coworker who simply, personally, brought them along. You never know who your Simon might become.
Prayer: Lord, give us Andrew's heart — the simple instinct to bring the people right in front of us to You. Help us to start with those closest to us, pointing them to Jesus not through clever words but through a sincere "come and see." Amen.
