Thursday's Reflection
1 Corinthians 2:4-5 — And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
If anyone could have relied on impressive words, it was Paul. He was brilliantly educated, trained in the finest schools of his day, more than capable of dazzling an audience with rhetoric and argument. Yet he deliberately set all of that aside. When he came to share the gospel, he says, he did not come with clever speech or persuasive human wisdom. He came in weakness, in the simple demonstration of the Spirit's power. And he tells us why: he wanted people's faith to rest on God's power, not on his eloquence. A faith won by a clever argument can be lost to a cleverer one. A faith born of God's power stands.
This is enormously freeing for the ordinary believer who feels unqualified to witness. We tend to think that if we just had better words, more training, sharper arguments, we could finally share our faith effectively. But Paul says the power was never in the words to begin with. The Holy Spirit is the one who opens hearts and brings people to faith. Our job is not to be persuasive enough to save someone — we could never be that persuasive. Our job is simply to be available, to point honestly to Christ, and to trust the Spirit to do what only He can do.
This means the most ordinary, stumbling witness — like Thomas Bilney's quiet, personal confession of faith to a man who opposed him — can carry more power than the most polished speech, because the power is not in the delivery. It is in the Spirit working through it. The shy believer who simply tells a friend what God has done in their life is not at a disadvantage compared to the gifted speaker. Both are doing exactly the same thing: getting out of the way and letting God's power do the work. We do not have to be eloquent. We only have to be willing, and let the Spirit supply the power.
Prayer: Lord, free us from thinking our witness depends on having the right words. Remind us that the power belongs to Your Spirit, not to our eloquence. Make us willing and available, and do through us what only You can do. Amen.
