Friday's Reflection
Acts 4:13 — Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
Peter and John were standing before the most powerful religious leaders in the land — educated, sophisticated men who held their lives in their hands. And what struck those leaders was not the apostles' credentials, because they had none. Peter and John were ordinary, untrained fishermen. What the leaders could not explain was their boldness and their bearing, and Luke tells us they reached a startling conclusion: these men had been with Jesus. Something about time spent in the presence of Christ had left a mark on them that no amount of formal training could produce, and that no amount of opposition could erase.
This points to the deepest form of witness, the one that underlies all the others. Before our words, before our hospitality, before any deliberate effort to share our faith, there is simply the question of whether people can tell we have been with Jesus. A life genuinely shaped by time in His presence carries a quality that others notice even when they cannot name it — a peace, a kindness, an unexplainable steadiness, a love that does not run out. People take knowledge of that. It raises questions. It draws them, often long before a single word is spoken.
The challenge in this, of course, is that you cannot fake having been with Jesus. The mark Peter and John carried was real because the time they had spent with Him was real. This is why witness can never be reduced to technique. The most effective thing any of us can do to share our faith is to actually spend time with Christ — in His Word, in prayer, in genuine fellowship with Him — and let that transform us. A life that has truly been with Jesus becomes a witness before it ever opens its mouth. People may forget our arguments, but they do not forget meeting someone who has clearly been with Him.
Prayer: Lord, the deepest witness is a life that has been with You. Draw us into real time in Your presence, and let it leave a mark on us that others can see. May people take knowledge of us, that we have been with Jesus. Amen.
