Faithful to the End

Sunday's Reflection
2 Timothy 4:7 — I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
These are among the last recorded words of the apostle Paul, written from a prison cell as he awaited execution. Looking back over a lifetime of hardship, imprisonment, shipwreck, and tireless service, he does not boast of great achievements or count his converts. He reaches for the image of a race, and he says simply: I finished it. That is the goal of the Christian life — not merely to start well, not merely to have good moments along the way, but to finish faithful. Anyone can begin a race. The test of a runner is whether they cross the line.
It is a sobering truth that starting the Christian life is not the same as finishing it. The Bible is full of people who began with promise and did not end well — a king who started humble and grew proud, disciples who followed for a while and then turned back, believers who ran well for a season and were tripped up near the end. Finishing well is not automatic. It is the fruit of a thousand daily choices to keep going, keep trusting, and keep the faith when it would be easier to drift, compromise, or quit. The final stretch of any race is where runners are most tempted to slow down, and the Christian life is no different.
This week, as we come to the close of our year's journey together, we look at what it means to be faithful to the very end — in an old man who had served Christ for eighty-six years and would not deny Him even to save his life, in a woman who suffered terribly on the mission field and yet went back to keep serving, and in the Scriptures that show us how to run our race and finish it well. The question for the week, and for a lifetime, is this: not have you started, but will you finish?

Prayer: Father, it is not enough to begin well; we long to finish faithful. Guard us through the daily choices and the final stretch, and keep us running until we cross the line. Help us, like Paul, to be able to say at the end that we kept the faith. Amen.
