Faithful to the End

Tuesday's Reflection
Hebrews 12:1-2 — Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.
The writer of Hebrews pictures the Christian life as a long-distance race, and he gives us practical wisdom for running it to the finish. First, he says, lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us. A runner strips off anything that would slow them down. There are things in every life that are not necessarily sins but are still weights — distractions, entanglements, good things that have grown too heavy — and there are besetting sins that trip us up again and again. Finishing well begins with honestly setting these aside, because we cannot run the distance while carrying what drags us down.
Then he tells us how to run: with patience. The word means endurance, steady perseverance over the long haul. This is not a sprint but a marathon, and marathons are not won by bursts of speed but by the refusal to stop. The race is "set before us" — each of us has our own course to run, our own particular stretch marked out by God, and our task is not to run someone else's race but to finish our own with patient endurance. Some stretches will be uphill and lonely, but the call is simply to keep going, one faithful step after another, all the way to the line.
Above all, he tells us where to fix our eyes: on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. A runner who looks at the crowd, or back over their shoulder, or down at their own tired legs, will falter. The secret is to keep looking ahead to Jesus — the One who began our faith and has promised to complete it. He ran His own race all the way to the cross, endured to the end, and now stands at the finish line as both our example and our goal. We do not run in our own strength or toward an empty tape. We run looking to Him, and He carries us home.
Prayer: Lord, help us lay aside the weights and the sins that slow us down, and to run our own race with patient endurance. When we grow weary, fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and carry us all the way to the finish line. Amen.
