Faithful to the End

Friday's Reflection
2 Timothy 4:8 — Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them that love his appearing.
Having said "I have finished my course," Paul lifts his eyes from the finish line to the prize beyond it. There is laid up for me, he says, a crown of righteousness. He is not anxious about what awaits him on the other side of death; he is expectant, even joyful. He pictures the Lord, the righteous judge, waiting to give him a crown — not a reward he earned by his own merit, but the gift of grace promised to all who have run faithfully. After a hard race, Paul looks ahead not to an ending but to a coronation. Death, for the faithful believer, is not the finish of everything; it is the doorway to the reward.
And then Paul opens the promise wide. This crown, he says, is not for me only, but for all who love His appearing. That includes you. The reward at the end of the race is not reserved for apostles and martyrs and famous saints. It is promised to every ordinary believer who loves the Lord and longs for His coming. The homemaker, the laborer, the student, the elderly believer quietly keeping the faith in obscurity — all who love His appearing have the same crown laid up for them. The finish line is not a narrow gate for the spiritual elite, but a wide welcome for all who have kept faith.
Notice how this last thought ties our whole two weeks together. Those who finish well are those who love His appearing — the very hope we considered last week. The believer who lives longing for Christ's return is the believer who stays faithful to the end, because they are running toward Someone they love and long to see. The hope of His coming and the call to finish faithful are two sides of one coin. We keep the faith because we love His appearing, and we love His appearing because we know the crown, and the Lord who gives it, are waiting just beyond the line.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that beyond the finish line there is a crown laid up not just for the great saints, but for all who love Your appearing. Fill us with that love, and let the hope of seeing You keep us faithful all the way home. Amen.
