Being Light and Salt
🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional
Saturday's Reflection
Matthew 5:16 — Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
This week we looked at what it means to be light and salt in the world. Desmond Doss endured mockery for his convictions and then, on his Sabbath at Hacksaw Ridge, saved seventy-five men without ever firing a shot — his light shining brightest in the darkest place. Florence Nightingale carried a literal lamp through the wards of a war hospital, doing good for God "without the reputation," and became the founder of modern nursing. And the Scriptures showed us that gracious speech opens doors, a consistently good life silences critics over time, and the salt must keep its savor or become useless.
The thread through all of it: we don't shine by trying harder or being louder. We shine by reflecting a light that came from God, and by removing the things that block it — bitterness, selfishness, going through the motions. Salt works quietly. Light works without drawing attention to itself. Our job isn't to impress people with how good we are. It's to live in a way that makes them look past us to God. When our goodness is genuine, people don't end up admiring us — they end up glorifying our Father in heaven. That's the whole point.
On this Sabbath, rest in the One who is the true Light. You don't have to generate anything today. The light has already come to you. Rest in it, soak in it, let it fill you — so that when the new week begins, it can shine out of you naturally, without striving, into a world that badly needs it.
"The light of the Sun of Righteousness is to shine forth in good works—in words of truth and deeds of holiness." (Ellen G. White, Christ's Object Lessons, p. 416)
Prayer: Father, thank You that the light has already come to us through Jesus. This Sabbath we rest in it. Fill us so full of Your light that it shines out of us naturally in the week ahead. Amen.
