Monday's Reflection
Proverbs 31:8–9 — Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
William Wilberforce was a gifted young politician, elected to Parliament at twenty-one, charming and ambitious, on a clear path to power. Then, in 1784–85, he experienced a deep conversion to Christ. It changed everything — including how he saw his career. He seriously considered leaving politics for ministry, until friends convinced him that God could use him right where he was. His spiritual adviser was John Newton, the former slave-ship captain who had repented and written "Amazing Grace."
From 1787 onward, Wilberforce gave his life to one enormous cause: ending the slave trade and then slavery itself across the British Empire. It was a brutal, grinding fight. He faced powerful economic interests, political ridicule, and decades of defeat. He brought bill after bill, lost vote after vote, and kept going. His health broke down. The years stretched into decades.
Finally, on July 26, 1833 — forty-six years after he began — Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act. Wilberforce heard the news on his deathbed and died three days later. Around 800,000 enslaved people were eventually freed. He had spent nearly his entire adult life pleading "the cause of the poor and needy," and he did it not through rage but through patient, relentless, principled love.
Prayer: Lord, give us Wilberforce's stubborn commitment to what is right — and the patience to keep working for justice even when the victory takes a lifetime. Amen.
