Thursday's Reflection

1 Peter 2:12 — Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Peter is realistic: Christians will sometimes be misunderstood, criticized, even falsely accused. His strategy isn't to argue back. It's to live so consistently well that the good life itself eventually silences the criticism and points people toward God. The word "conversation" here means your whole way of living, not just your speech.
This is a long game. Peter doesn't promise that good behavior will win people over immediately — he says they'll glorify God "in the day of visitation," which may be far off. In the meantime, we keep living with integrity whether or not it's recognized, trusting that consistent goodness leaves a mark even when it seems ignored.
Think about how much weight this puts on the ordinary witness of a life well lived. We often assume evangelism means having the right words. Peter says it often means having the right works — honesty when no one's checking, kindness toward people who can't repay it, faithfulness in small things over a long time. People who would never read a tract or attend a service are still watching how we live. And a consistently good life is an argument that's very hard to refute.
Prayer: Lord, when we're misunderstood, help us answer with a good life rather than a defensive word. Let our works point people to You, even if it takes years. Amen.
