Being Light and Salt

Wednesday's Reflection

John 8:12 — Then spake Jesus unto them again, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 into a wealthy British family that expected her to marry well and live a comfortable life. But at seventeen she became convinced God was calling her to something else. She later wrote that God had asked her "would I do good for Him." She turned down a respectable marriage and, against her family's wishes, trained as a nurse — a lowly, disreputable job at the time.
When the Crimean War broke out, reports reached Britain of wounded soldiers dying in filthy, neglected military hospitals. Nightingale led a team of nurses to Scutari, where she found appalling conditions. She and her nurses scrubbed the wards, set up clean food and laundry, wrote letters home for dying men, and transformed the death rate through simple sanitation. At night, when everyone else slept, she walked the rows of beds carrying a lamp, checking on the wounded one by one. The soldiers called her "the Lady with the Lamp."
That image — a single light moving through the darkness of a place full of suffering — became famous around the world. But for Florence, the lamp was never the point. The point was the calling behind it: to do good for God, even "without the reputation," as she put it. Her light shone because it was lit by something deeper than herself.
Prayer: Lord, like Florence Nightingale, help us carry light into the dark and suffering places near us — not for our own reputation, but to do good for You. Amen.
