Justice and Mercy

Friday's Reflection
Psalm 89:14 — Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
This verse gives us a picture of how God governs. His throne rests on justice — there's no corruption in God, no favoritism, no inconsistency. But mercy and truth go ahead of Him like messengers clearing the road. So when God comes to judge, mercy arrives first. When He upholds truth, He does it with compassion. The cross is where these meet perfectly: justice was fully satisfied, and mercy was fully poured out, at the same moment.
We humans struggle to hold this balance. Judges must be just — but justice with no mercy turns cold and cruel. Parents must be honest with their children — but truth with no love wounds rather than heals. The challenge for anyone with authority — parent, boss, teacher, leader — is to reflect God's balance rather than collapsing into one side.
The good news is that we're not left to manufacture this balance on our own. The more we understand how God has treated us — with perfect justice satisfied at the cross and perfect mercy extended to us there — the more naturally we begin to treat others the same way. We give mercy because we've received it. We value truth because we've been told the truth about ourselves and loved anyway.
Prayer: Lord, wherever we have authority over others, help us reflect Your balance — just and merciful at the same time, the way You have been with us. Amen.
