Being Light and Salt

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Sunday's Reflection

Matthew 5:16 — Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Jesus used two everyday things to describe what His followers are meant to be in the world: light and salt. Light pushes back darkness and helps people find their way. Salt preserves and brings out flavor. Both work quietly, and both make a real difference. That's the picture Jesus paints of a Christian — not someone loud and showy, but someone whose presence makes the world around them a little brighter and a little better.
The key thing about both light and salt is that they don't draw attention to themselves. You don't notice salt; you notice the food tastes good. You don't stare at a lamp; you see what it reveals. Jesus says our good works should point people not to us, but to God. We're not the light source — we just reflect a light that comes from Him. This week we'll look at what it means to live in a way that quietly points people toward God, through ordinary goodness and lives that are different in a way people can't quite explain.
"Christ does not bid His followers strive to shine. He says, Let your light shine. If you have received the grace of God, the light is in you. Remove the obstructions, and the Lord's glory will be revealed." (Ellen G. White, Christ's Object Lessons, p. 415)
This week's question: What "obstructions" might be dimming the light God has put in you?
Prayer: Father, let our lives quietly point people to You. Remove whatever dims the light You've placed in us. Amen.
