Wednesday's Reflection
Isaiah 52:7 — How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace.
Amy Carmichael left Ireland in 1885 and never came home again. After short, health-broken stays in Japan and Ceylon, she arrived in southern India in 1895 and stayed for fifty-five years without a single furlough. To reach the people, she wore Indian dress and even darkened her skin with coffee so she could travel the hot, dusty roads without drawing a crowd — willing to go to great lengths to save even one child.
Her life's work began with a single girl. In 1901 a seven-year-old named Preena escaped from a Hindu temple where she had been handed over as a servant — a system that forced children into a life of abuse. Amy took her in and refused to send her back, despite threats. That one rescue became a flood. Over the years the Dohnavur Fellowship she founded sheltered more than a thousand children, who knew her simply as "Amma" — Mother.
When a young woman wrote to ask what missionary life was really like, Amy's reply was honest and stark: "Missionary life is simply a chance to die." She meant dying to comfort, to recognition, to self. Her feet walked countless miles of Indian road — and to the children she saved, those feet were beautiful, because they carried the news that God sees the helpless and acts to rescue them.
Prayer: Lord, give us Amy Carmichael's willingness to spend ourselves for others — to carry good news to the people the world has forgotten. Amen.
