Living by the Word

Wednesday's Reflection
Hebrews 4:12 — For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword.
The Word of God is alive and active, piercing through our defenses to reach the deepest places of the heart. It exposes hidden motives, convicts the conscience, and reveals truth that no human wisdom can uncover. Unlike any human argument, Scripture cuts through excuses and pretense, bringing both uncomfortable conviction and healing transformation.
In the 1800s, a young man named Jerry McAuley lived as a river pirate and thief in New York City. Hardened by years of crime, he ended up in Sing Sing Prison with no hope of redemption. There, a fellow prisoner read aloud from the Bible, and one verse pierced McAuley's heart like a sword: "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18). The Word broke through years of bitterness and guilt in an instant. McAuley surrendered his life to Christ and, after his release, founded the Water Street Mission in 1872—one of America's first rescue missions, which transformed countless lives trapped in addiction and despair. The power that changed him was not human persuasion but the living Word of God.
Prayer: Lord, let Your Word search our hearts and shape our lives. Cut away all pride and sin that blind us from Your truth. May Your living Word bring healing, conviction, and strength, that we may walk in obedience and peace. Amen.
