Thursday's Reflection
Romans 8:18 — For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Paul does an interesting thing in this verse — he weighs two things against each other. On one side of the scale he puts all the sufferings of this present life: the pain, the loss, the hardship, the grief, everything that weighs us down. On the other side he puts the glory that is coming. And his conclusion is that the two are not even in the same category. The sufferings are real, and Paul of all people knew real suffering — but compared to the glory that will be revealed, he says, they are not worthy of comparison. The scale tips so far toward eternity that the present pain, heavy as it is, becomes almost weightless by comparison.
This is not a denial of suffering. Paul is not saying our pain does not matter or that we should pretend it away. He felt his afflictions deeply and wrote about them honestly. What he is saying is that suffering, however crushing it feels right now, is temporary — and the glory that is coming is eternal and beyond anything we can imagine. When you can only see the present, suffering fills the whole horizon and seems to have no end. But when you can see by faith all the way to eternity, the present trouble takes its true proportion. It is real, but it is brief. And on the other side of it is a weight of glory that will make it all worthwhile.
This perspective is what allows believers to endure what would otherwise break them. The person who suffers with no view beyond this life has nothing to set against the pain, and the pain wins. But the person who suffers with eternity in view has something infinitely greater on the other side of the scale. The illness, the heartbreak, the long hard season — none of it is the end of the story, and none of it gets the final word. The final word is glory. Holding that truth does not make the suffering disappear, but it keeps it from swallowing us whole.
Prayer: Lord, when present suffering fills our whole horizon, lift our eyes to the glory that is coming. Help us to weigh our trials honestly against eternity, and to find in that weighing the strength to endure. The pain is real, but it is not the end. Amen.
