Wednesday's Reflection
2 Corinthians 5:1 — For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
Nabeel Qureshi grew up in a devout Muslim family and seemed destined for an ordinary, successful life. He trained as a medical doctor. But after years of honest investigation, deep friendships, and wrestling with the evidence, he became a Christian — a costly decision that strained his relationship with the family he loved. He went on to become a gifted writer and speaker, telling his story to audiences around the world and helping countless people think through the biggest questions of faith. He was young, brilliant, full of life, with what looked like decades of fruitful work ahead of him.
Then, in his early thirties, Nabeel was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer. He was a doctor; he knew exactly what the numbers meant. He documented the final year of his life with remarkable honesty — and it was honest. He prayed for healing. He wrestled with fear and confusion. He did not pretend that facing death in his thirties, with a young wife and daughter, was easy or that he had it all figured out. But underneath the very real struggle was an anchor that held: the unshakable hope that this life was not all there is, and that the One he had given everything to follow had prepared something eternal for him. He died at thirty-four, holding onto that hope.
Paul gives the exact image that sustained Nabeel and has sustained believers for two thousand years. Our bodies, he says, are like a tent — a temporary dwelling, fragile and easily taken down. But when this earthly tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. That is why a dying man in his thirties could face the end with hope rather than despair. He knew that death was not the demolition of his existence but the taking down of a tent so that he could move into a permanent home. The eternal perspective does not make us numb to the pain of death — it gives us something solid to stand on when we face it.
Prayer: Lord, when we face our own mortality or the loss of those we love, anchor us in the hope that held Nabeel Qureshi. Remind us that this fragile tent is not the end, and that You have prepared for us an eternal house not made with hands. Amen.
