Guarding the Heart

Saturday's Reflection
Proverbs 4:23 — Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
This week we looked at what it means to guard the heart. Richard Wurmbrand endured fourteen years of torture in Communist prisons and refused to let the root of bitterness grow in him, choosing instead to pray for his torturers and even love them — guarding the one thing his jailers could never take. Billy Graham and his young team built deliberate safeguards around their lives because they were honest enough to know their own hearts could fail, and those fences held for decades. And the Scriptures showed us the heart as soil to be cultivated, the mind as something to fill with what is good, and the Word of God hidden in the heart as our surest defense.
The thread is consistent throughout. The heart does not guard itself. Left alone, it drifts, hardens, grows bitter, or fills with whatever the world pours into it. Guarding it takes diligence — the daily work of watching what we let in, pulling up the roots before they spread, building wise safeguards before temptation comes, and filling the heart with truth and with God's Word. This is not anxious self-protection. It is the most important stewardship we have, because out of the heart flow the issues of life. Guard the source, and the whole stream runs clean.
On this Sabbath, rest in the One who keeps what we cannot keep on our own. We guard our hearts with all diligence, yes — but ultimately it is God who garrisons them, God who keeps us near, God who does in us what our own effort never could. Lay down the exhausting work of trying to hold yourself together by willpower, and rest in the God who keeps the hearts of those who keep close to Him. He is faithful to guard what we entrust to Him.

Prayer: Father, thank You that You keep our hearts when we keep close to You. As we rest this Sabbath, we entrust to You the wellspring of our lives. Guard what we cannot guard ourselves, and keep our hearts turned toward You as naturally as a flower turns to the sun. Amen.
