Wisdom

Friday's Reflection

James 3:17 — But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
Not everything that calls itself wisdom is wise. James warns earlier in this chapter that there is a kind of "wisdom" that is earthly and self-serving — the cleverness that knows how to get ahead, win arguments, and come out on top, but leaves a trail of bitterness and division behind it. The world often admires that kind of shrewdness and calls it smart. James calls it false. Then he describes the real thing, and it looks completely different. You can tell genuine wisdom not by how clever it sounds, but by the kind of life it produces.
Look at the list. Heavenly wisdom is first pure — it comes from clean motives, not hidden agendas. Then peaceable — it builds bridges rather than burning them. Gentle, and willing to yield — it does not have to win every argument or have the last word. Full of mercy and good fruits — it shows up in kindness you can actually see. Without partiality and without hypocrisy — it treats people the same whether they can do anything for you or not. This is a portrait of a wise person, and notice how much of it is about character rather than cleverness. True wisdom makes a person better to be around, not just harder to argue with.
This gives us a practical test for the "wisdom" being sold to us, and even for our own. Does it make peace or stir up conflict? Does it make us gentler or sharper, more merciful or more cutting, more honest or more two-faced? If something claims to be wise but consistently produces division, pride, and harshness, James says it is not from above at all — no matter how brilliant it sounds. The wisdom that comes from God can always be recognized by its fruit. It looks, in the end, a great deal like the character of Jesus Himself.
Prayer: Lord, save us from the false wisdom that is clever but harsh, shrewd but divisive. Grow in us the wisdom from above — pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy — until our wisdom begins to look like the character of Christ. Amen.
