The Sabbath

Saturday's Reflection

Genesis 2:2-3 — And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day... And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.
This week we looked at the gift of the Sabbath. Rachel Oakes Preston, a quiet believer, helped restore this forgotten truth to a whole movement simply by sharing what she had found in Scripture. The rhythm of rest woven into creation — the nightly gift of sleep, the seasons of recovery in nature — showed us that rest is part of God's design, not a flaw in it. And the Scriptures showed us the Sabbath as a creation gift older than sin, a commandment rooted in creation, a day Jesus called made for us, and a delight in which we delight ourselves in the Lord.
The thread through all of it is that the Sabbath is grace, not burden. God set apart the seventh day and blessed it at the very beginning, before any law, as a gift for all people. It is a weekly memorial that we did not make ourselves, that our worth is not measured by our productivity, and that we belong to a Creator who invites us to rest in Him. In a world that never stops, the Sabbath is God's standing invitation to stop — to lay down our striving, lift our eyes from our work, and remember who we are and to whom we belong.
On this Sabbath, then, do the very thing this week has been about: rest. Not restless rest, glancing at the clock, but the deep rest of a creature at peace with the Creator. Delight yourself in the Lord today. Lay down the burdens of the week, receive the gift God set apart for you from the foundation of the world, and let this day be a foretaste of the eternal rest that awaits all God's people. The One who rested on the seventh day and blessed it is the same One who says to the weary: come unto Me, and I will give you rest.
"To all who receive the Sabbath as a sign of Christ's creative and redeeming power, it will be a delight. Seeing Christ in it, they delight themselves in Him." (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 289)
Prayer: Father, thank You for the Sabbath — Your gift of rest from the beginning of the world. As we rest today, we lay down our striving and receive Your grace. Make this day a delight, a sign of Your creative and redeeming power, and a foretaste of the rest that is to come. Amen.
