The Sabbath

Friday's Reflection
Isaiah 58:13-14 — If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight... Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD.
God, through Isaiah, gives us one of the most beautiful descriptions of what the Sabbath is meant to be: a delight. Not a grim duty, not a day of gloom and restriction, but a delight — something we look forward to, something that brings joy. This cuts against every caricature of the Sabbath as a dreary day of prohibitions. God's design is the opposite. He offers us a day set free from the ordinary demands and pursuits of life, a day to lift our eyes from our own concerns and delight ourselves in Him.
Notice the connection Isaiah makes. When we turn from our own pursuits and honor the Sabbath, calling it a delight, the result is that we delight ourselves in the Lord. The Sabbath is meant to reorient our joy. Six days a week our attention is consumed by work, tasks, and worries. The Sabbath lifts us out of that current and turns us toward God, toward worship, toward the people we love, toward the beauty of what He has made. It is a weekly appointment with joy — a day to remember that life is more than labor, that we are more than what we accomplish, and that our deepest delight is meant to be found in God Himself.
In our exhausted, overworked age, this is a gift almost too good to believe. The world tells us to keep going, keep producing, keep striving, and it leaves us depleted and empty. God says: one day in seven, stop, and delight. Come away from the treadmill of pleasure-seeking and busyness that never satisfies, and find your delight in Me. Those who learn to keep the Sabbath as God intended discover that it is not a day taken away from them, but a day given to them — the best day of the week, a foretaste of the eternal rest that awaits God's people. It is a delight, because the God we meet there is Himself our greatest delight.
Prayer: Lord, teach us to call the Sabbath a delight, and through it to delight ourselves in You. Lift us out of the treadmill of striving and pleasure-seeking, and let this day turn our hearts back to the joy that is found in You alone. Amen.
