The Sabbath

Sunday's Reflection
Genesis 2:2-3 — And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.
The very first thing God declared holy was not a place or a person, but a day. After six days of creation, God rested on the seventh — not because He was tired, for the Almighty does not grow weary, but to set an example and to give His creation a gift. He blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, which means He set it apart for a sacred purpose. The Sabbath is woven into the fabric of the world from the very beginning, before there was sin, before there was a nation of Israel, before there was any law given at Sinai. It is a creation gift, meant for all people, for all time.
This is why the Sabbath matters so deeply. It is not a burdensome rule invented by religion, but a rhythm God built into the world for our good. Later, when God gave the Ten Commandments, He pointed right back to this beginning: remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy — for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and rested the seventh. The Sabbath is a weekly memorial of creation, a standing reminder every seven days that we did not make ourselves, that we belong to a Creator, and that our worth is not measured by our productivity.
This week we look at the gift of the Sabbath — in a quiet woman whose faithfulness helped restore this forgotten truth to a whole movement, in the rhythm of rest that God has woven into the very design of living things, and in the Scriptures that show us the Sabbath as commandment, as gift, and as delight. The question for the week is a searching one in our restless, exhausted age: have we received the rest God offers, or are we still trying to prove our worth by never stopping?
"The Sabbath was not for Israel merely, but for the world. It had been made known to man in Eden, and, like the other precepts of the Decalogue, it is of imperishable obligation." (Ellen G. White, Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 48)
Prayer: Creator God, thank You for the gift of the Sabbath, set apart and blessed from the beginning of the world. Teach us to receive it not as a burden but as a delight, a weekly rest in You. Free us from the endless striving that never stops. Amen.
