Godly Leadership

🎧 Listen to Today's Devotional

Thursday's Reflection

1 Peter 5:2-3 — Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
Peter's instructions to church leaders are striking in what they rule out. Not by constraint — meaning not because you have to, not out of obligation or duty without heart. Not for money — meaning leadership is not a career move or a means to financial security. Not as lords — meaning you do not own the people in your care, you do not rule them, you do not treat them as a resource to be managed for your own purposes. Every one of these negatives points to the same problem: leadership that is really about the leader rather than about the people being led.
The alternative Peter describes is just as specific. Willingly — you want to serve, even when it costs something. With a ready mind — eager, not reluctant, not doing the minimum. As examples to the flock — not standing above the people and issuing instructions, but walking in front of them and showing them the way by how you live. The leader who tells people to be patient while being visibly impatient has lost credibility. The leader who calls for sacrifice while protecting their own comfort has forfeited trust. Leadership by example is the most costly kind because it requires that the leader actually be what they are calling others to become.
Peter adds a remarkable promise at the end of this passage — when the Chief Shepherd appears, faithful leaders will receive a crown of glory that will not fade. The work of godly leadership is not wasted, even when it is invisible, even when it is not appreciated, even when it seems to produce nothing. The Chief Shepherd sees every act of faithful oversight. He rewards what the world does not notice.
Prayer: Lord, make us the kind of leaders Peter describes — willing, eager, leading by example rather than by instruction. Where we have been lords over Your people rather than servants of them, forgive us and correct us. Amen.
